FKCS has an exciting project going on in our Project Lighthouse, street outreach program, located in Key West. In a nutshell, it is called “Who I am and What I Know” photos, images and words of youth on a journey. All youth have a story to tell, but what is the story of the homeless, street kid? No mother, no father and no home.
You can see, read and hear their moving stories of surviving on the streets by visiting the Studio’s of Key West, 600 White Street., Space 2. Currently, their photography, poetry and other art images are on display. The show will continue until July 26, 2011. There will be a reception Thursday, July 21 at the Studios of Key West, 600 White Street., Space 2 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
Since the program began art has been a link to the kids. However, during the past year Lura Smedstad, an AmeriCorps Volunteer and staff member with Project Lighthouse, took the art theme in a very new direction. Smedstad is completing her Masters in Art Therapy. In doing this work, it occurred to her that the youth on the streets have many very captivating (and oftentimes misunderstood) stories to tell. Smedstad challenged the kids to carry a camera with them and capture their stories through the pictures they snapped. Those pictures and other forms of art are on display for the public.
Her idea was well received by the kids/travelers that pass through the doors at Project Lighthouse and by the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, Artreach program. To read more on the work of the Florida Key Children's Shelter and Project Lighthouse please click on the link below.
During the Mayor’s Ball, we raise money and awareness to support the many programs provided by the Florida Keys Children's Shelter (FKCS). FKCS serves children, teens and families throughout all of Monroe County. Last year alone, we served over 700 children and families. If you believe in children and happy childhoods, I must ask, will you please support our important work through joining us for an evening of fun and celebration at our upcoming Mayor’s Ball on Saturday, January 15, 2011, at the outstanding Casa Marina Beach Resort, Key West!
